Anniversary

I married my true love, Natasha, on Nov 7, 2002. She completes me. I was looking on the internet for gift ideas and found that wood is the traditional 5th anniversary gift. It reminded me that Natasha loves palm trees. I have my own idea about palm trees being a perfect symbol of marriage. They have to be strong enough to survive the worst storms but also be flexible enough not to break under the pressure. Bending is the sure thing in any long relationship that will be needed from time to time and marriage is forever so there’s all the more need for being a little flexible.

I wrote this song on Sunday night hoping that it captures something of the idea of loving the real person, not just the ideal. Wood Anniversary is available in the Listening Room.

WOOD ANNIVERSARY

You’re selfish and lazy vindictive and cruel
I’m stupid and fat and totally the fool
I think I know you almost as well as you know me
You’ve seen the worst I’ve ever been
Through thick since I was thin
I’m yours totally

It’s our wood anniversary
Five years of harmony and bliss
It’s our wood anniversary
It still I do and seal it with a kiss

The moment I saw you I knew my life had changed
I fell so hard Cupid’s arrow gave me pain
When it’s real the truth is revealed in the emptiest cliches
The dumbest lyrics come alive
While looking in your eyes
A beautiful surprise

It’s our wood anniversary
Five years of harmony and bliss
It’s our wood anniversary
It still I do and seal it with a kiss

I would if I could
Buy you the house by the sea
White walls and the skylights
And a yacht floating right outside
So we could endlessly travel aimlessly

Bora Bora, Tahiti, Monte Carlo, Italy
I think you know me almost as well as I know you
I want to be your shining knight
My armor’s not so bright
Our love will pull us through

It’s our wood anniversary
Five years of harmony and bliss
It’s our wood anniversary
It still I do and seal it with a kiss

You’re beautiful and thoughtful and gracious and kind
I thank the heavens that you’ve been mine

Looking for a new studio

I looked at a couple of potential new studios today. The current one is super comfy and I’m going to miss it when the lease is upat the end of Jan. So far everything looks like a step down. Prices are sky high here in Santa Monica so for all of you able to get a place for less than $4/sq foot count yourselves lucky. 8 years at this address went so fast.

I’ve got a song for Wed. Drums are down. I’ll squeak in some more tracks tomorrow before I do some more sidelining at the piano for a new HBO show.

Diet results : – (

Me 228 Goal 226 I’m not doin’ so good. This week I’m gonna lose for sure.

Boy do I love Coke Zero. All the caffeine and no calories. Diet Coke sucks. Don’t know the difference except that I like CZ! That’s a free endorsements.

Jonathan Coultan
, who inspired this whole WS project seems to be a stand up guy. We’ve traded a couple of emails and he’s supportive and friendly. I encourage everyone to go to his site and buy some of his very clever songs.

Yoga is for everyone

Did yoga overlooking the beach today. Not a bad thing, eh? But, boy am I not flexible. We’re  sitting and the instructor says just relax and flop forward, no pressure on your back at all. Well, if I flop it’s not going to be forward. And keeping my back tight is the only thing keeping me headed in the forward direction. I love the benefits but I’m going have to make my own video and call it Yoga For Stiffs.

Tardy but present

Finally got the files posted for WS at 3:30am Fri morning. That’s a tad late. I wrote it on Sunday but that doesn’t quite count. It’s called “Jackson, Tn” and is in the Listening Station. Feels so good to have 5 songs I’m going to burn a CD and drive around with it : – )

I was sitting beside a harp for two days played by the  star Lori Andrews. She’s got 8 jazz harp CD’s out. What an instrument. Google that woman.

Trying to destress. Although WS takes a bit of time it takes my brain away from stressful thought. Like the yoga people say…

Namaste

Happy Halloween

Party hardy ghouls and guys! The halloween song is a tribute to my hometown. I don’t think there’s any deeper meaning there ; – 0 It’ll show up on the listening station asap.

Martin

Jackson, TN

I come up from Jackson in west Tennessee
Named after the president called Old Hickory
I’ve been known to travel, there’s so much to see
But I’ve only got one hometown, that’s Jackson, TN

I went to high school in the halls of JCM
Where I went to band camp where we marched to win
Then I took some college classes down at JSCC
There’s only one town where this came to be

I come up from Jackson, that’s west Tennessee
Named after the president known as Old Hickory
I’ve had my travels, I’ve been across the sea
But, I’ve only got one hometown that’s Jackson, TN

Rock-n-Roll got started with one little tune
When Carl Perkins wrote Blue Suede Shoes
He wrote it in his kitchen on Parkview Street
He got the world to rocking with his hillbilly beat

I come up from Jackson, the state of Tennessee
You’ve only got one hometown, mine’s Jackson, Tn

What’s that sound? It sounds like trouble
Jackson’s got a story that’s sad but true
about a native son on the 382
He saved his switchman’s life before the wreck
By telling him to jump as they neared the gates of Hell
Can you hear that train a coming?
All a clickety clack
Casey Jones died that day
The train ran off its tracks,

Twice I’ve been to funerals at Brown’s cemetery
I’ll always remember the days my folks were buried
Part of me is lost in that Jackson ground
But I’m standing here today to try and make my Mother proud

I come up from Jackson down in Tennessee
Named after the president known as Old Hickory
No matter where I travel I will always be
A good ole boy with one hometown, that’s Jackson, TN

Old Hickory

What a weird day. I felt terrible and did little. But I needed to pick up drums from the studio for 2 days of sideline work that’ll keep away from recording. I was thinking it’s going to be darn hard to do a song by Wed. Boom. out came a tribute to my hometown. It’s written. Still need to record before Wed midnite.

Goal: 227, Me 228

Drat. I’m up a pound this week and the goal is one pound less. OK. time to hit the gym.

Last night was a chance to try out that Elvis suit at a halloween party. The aging rockabilly comes alive in the Vegas era threads.

I’m conjuring up a song about my hometown of Jackson, TN. It’s going to be tight because I’m doing two days of sideline work. That’s being a on camera musician for a tv show or movie. There’s no playing, just pretending in the background. Jackson, TN is going to have to get wrote ; – ) today!

Blue Suede Shoes

Still reading the Carl Perkins bio. I’d like to record a Perkins tune. Just not sure if I can post it here on WS. When you press CDs it’s easy. Just pay a royalty to Harry Fox agency. Jonathan Coulton puts cover tunes on his thing a week. Curious how he handles the royalties for an internet only mp3.
